Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya - the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest mountain in Africa! Mount Kenya is not a mountain of one peak, but of many spikes, spires, and summits. When the clouds clear, this extinct volcano can be seen from Nairobi and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro! Mount Kenya is often said to be a mountaineer’s mountain because the highest peak on the mountain - Point Batian at 17,057’ - can only be reached via 15-20 pitches of 5.6-5.8 technical rock climbing.

Our custom route summits Point Lenana, Point John, Point Nelion, and Point Batian. Point Lenana is the highest non-technical summit at 17,022’ and is a popular and worthy destination in and of itself. Point John is a beautiful spire we will use as for technical training, and Point Nelion and Batian are the two highest peaks; separated by the famous “Gates of Mist”.

Mount Kenya appeals to mountaineers and rock climbers eager to experience a high altitude technical expedition! This stunning and adventurous hike requires high fitness levels, a love for heights, and a deep desire to learn technical mountaineering!

Kilimanjaro - 10 Day

Kilimanjaro - 10 Day

Kilimanjaro is not only the highest peak in Africa, it’s also the tallest freestanding mountain in the world! Called the “Mountain of Greatness” by the native Tanzanians, this journey to one of the famed Seven Summits is an experience of a lifetime! Additionally, the Seven Summit culture is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The camps, the food, celebratory song and dance, and camaraderie take this already once-in-a-lifetime experience to the next level!

Our non-technical custom route begins on the north side of the mountain allowing us the biggest chance to see Africa’s buffalo, elephant, and baboon. Often called the “Kenyan Route”, our ascent route follows the Rongai Route for a few days before meeting up with the Marangu Route, and then branches off at the summit to explore and sleep at Crater Camp. Our descent route descends the south side of the mountain and hikes us through five ecosystems including the rain forest and arctic alpine zone with glaciers! Although Kilimanjaro is partially covered in glaciers, our route meanders around the icy slopes to Uhuru Peak - the highest point in Africa. We do not use crampons, or rock climb at any time, making this expedition a high altitude trek.

This custom route sleeps us one night at Crater Camp with an elevation of 18,865’; the summit being 19,341’. Thus, hikers need to be in excellent physical condition in order to sleep at Crater Camp without altitude sickness. Physically, climbers need to be able to trek for eight hours per day and at one mph with a 10 pound pack. BE provides 6, 3, and 1-month training plans and the plans must be followed.

Kilimanjaro appeals to first-time mountaineers who are eager to experience a high altitude expedition as well as to the seasoned climber in pursuit of the Seven Summits.

Aconcagua - 19 Day

to Feb 26

Aconcagua - 19 Day

Aconcagua - the “Stone Sentinel” - is one of the famed Seven Summits and is considered sacred by the Incas. Aconcagua is the highest mountain in South America and the highest mountain outside of Asia. Situated in the Andes Range, this Seven Summit is located in Argentina and on the border of Chile and each February BELAY EXPEDITIONS takes just 12 mountaineers to the summit.

With several routes on Aconcagua, BE will be trekking the lesser trafficked route known as the Polish Traverse AKA the Aconcagua 360. The Polish Traverse is deemed to be more scenic since the route practically circumnavigates the mountain allowing climbers to see each face of Aconcagua. Hence the nickname “Aconcagua 360”. Aconcagua is home to many glaciers and our ascent through Valle de Vacas will take us atop the Polish Glacier. A glacier (as well as the route) named after the first team to summit the mountain via this route. A Polish team. Perhaps equally as important as scenery, this unique route adds one more day to the ascent - allowing for better acclimatization thus better chances at reaching the summit.

Aconcagua is arguably the highest non-technical mountain in the world since the climb does not require ropes, although we may use our ice axes and crampons occasionally. Due to the altitude of Aconcagua this mountain is considered a serious climb. The oxygen level at the summit is 40% of what it is at sea level. Although our itinerary is brilliantly designed for ideal acclimatization, the altitude will affect most climbers. However, the use of supplemental oxygen is not common. The training plan put forth by BELAY EXPEDITIONS is highly recommended and should be followed since most failed summit attempts are due to underprepared physical conditioning. Please note, that while porters and mules carry group gear, each climber is responsible for carrying all of their personal gear. Personal porters are available for an extra cost.

Aconcagua is a desired by those after the Seven Summits and for those advancing in mountaineering. Cheers to your Seven Summit!
