Welcome to Tokyo, home of Japan’s highest volcano - Mount Fuji! This country’s highpoint rises to 12,388’ and will require three days and two nights on the mountain. With tent camping prohibited on Mount Fuji, we will be sleeping in historic mountain huts en route to our summit. Mount Fuji, considered sacred by the Shinto religion, is one of three holy mountains in Japan. Women were prohibited to climb Mount Fuji until 1872; their beauty was believed to cause Mount Fuji to erupt. Mount Fuji is an active volcano with the last eruption being in 1707.

MEET CONRAD:

“The summit is what drives us, but it’s the climb that matters,” says American mountaineer, rock climber, and author Conrad Anker.

Conrad Anker is one of the most prolific explorers and mountaineers living today. His experience exceeds 40 years climbing and 50 expeditions around the globe. In addition to being the team leader of The North Face climbing team for 26 years, Conrad located the body of British climber, George Mallory, on his second Mount Everest expedition in 1999. Mallory was one of two climbers who died attempting the first summit of Mount Everest in 1924.

A few of Conrad’s most well-known accomplishments include:

• Climbing Mount Everest three times

• Achieving the first ascent of Meru’s Shark’s Fin with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk. The Shark’s Fin is the most technically complicated and dangerous peak in the Himalayas scaled to date.
