Backpack and climb a famed Colorado 14er this summer alongside your family, fellow Business Builder Camp members, and the local expert guides at BE. Your unforgettable peak journey is no out-and-back! This unique, custom route ascends the northeastern slopes and descends the southwestern slopes! To bring this epic route into fruition, we will begin our Colorado journey in Montrose, Colorado, where BE will pick you up at the airport then drive you two hours to the national historic mining town of Lake City, Colorado! Welcome to BE’s home!

Once you arrive in Lake City, you’ll check into your charming mountain town cabin and prepare for a magical three days and two nights in the colorful and mineral-rich mountains of the San Juan range. Together, we will backpack through stunning wilderness, sleep beside two picturesque alpine lakes, and summit what is commonly referred to as Colorado’s prettiest 14er - Handies Peak!

After the climb, we’ll reward ourselves with a celebratory soak and overnight stay at the much-deserved Ouray Hot Springs! Ouray? A quaint Colorado town called the “Switzerland of America” due to its dramatic mountainous scenery. No backpacking gear? No worries — rent BE’s top-notch gear at checkout! ITINERARY:

Day 1: Tuesday - Arrival & Lake City

Welcome to Colorado, home of 54 peaks rising over 14,000’! We’re stoked to climb one with you! Our journey commences at noon when BE will pick you up at Montrose Regional Airport or nearby hotel. We’ll then drive two scenic hours alongside Blue Mea Reservoir, Curecanti National Recreation Area, and the Lake Fork River en route to the national historic mining town of Lake City, CO. Once in Lake City, we’ll check into our cabins where we’ll begin to acclimatize, enjoy a team welcome dinner, review our itinerary, and prep our gear! Our hike begins tomorrow!

Day 2: Wednesday - Whitecross Lake in Grizzly Gulch!

Good morning! After breakfast and coffee, we’ll make our way to the trailhead to begin our stunning 4-mile hike through old growth aspen and spruce-fir forests. The summit of Handies Peak is in sight! We’ll end our day by pitching camp at our first alpine lake - Whitecross Lake - named by Belay. This alpine lake is a hidden gem as it is seen from nowhere except on a topographical map! We are stoked to sleep here with you! After a nutritious dinner and an after-dinner tea, we’ll get to bed early to prepare for our alpine start tomorrow!

Day 3: Thursday - Handies Peak & Sloan Lake

Good early alpine morning! Today is summit day and we’ll be waking up super early to catch a sunrise summit. After summit celebrations, you’ll have the option to extend your adventure by traversing the ridge for an additional mile to reach the summit of Colorado’s 13,000-foot peak, Whitecross Mountain! Post-mountain-top adventures, we’ll make our way down to our second camp for lunch and some optional alpine lake packrafting festivities! Tonight’s camp is at Sloan Lake - one of the most photographed lakes in our nation. Bask in the sun, rest easy, and soak up your summit victory! Your summit can be seen from camp - congratulations!

Day 4: Friday - Mountain Livin’ & Ouray Hot Springs

It’s our final morning on the mountain — a moment that’s always bittersweet. After breakfast, we’ll pack up our gear, tackle one last 13,000’ pass, then drop off the southwestern side of the mountain! Post-hike, we’ll check-in to our hot springs resort in Ouray, CO; a town also known as the “Switzerland of America”! Trust us, you want these hot springs more than you realize and…you deserve them! Tonight, simply rejuvenate and celebrate. We’ll see you at breakfast tomorrow! Included meals = Breakfast. Accommodations = Resort. Miles = 4.5. Ouray elevation = 7,784’.

Day 5: Saturday - Departure

It’s departure day and the morning is yours to enjoy at your leisure! Feel free to join BE at our farewell breakfast for goodbyes and to return any gear rentals you may have. Checkout is at 11:00 am, so please be sure to book your return flights for any time after 2:00 pm. If you drove to Lake City, don’t forget that you’ll have a 4-hour drive back to your car; BE can take you there. LOGISTICS:

  • Flying? Please book your flights in-and-out of Montrose Regional Airport! BE will meet you at the airport or nearby hotel at noon! We recommend booking your return flight for Saturday, Day 5 - no earlier than 2:00pm.

  • Driving? Meet BE in Lake City at 3:00pm on Tuesday, Day 1. Keep in mind, we are exiting the mountain near Ouray, CO and you will have a 4-hour drive back to Lake City to retrieve your car!

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY:

  • Journeyers who cancel their journey 90+ days before the start date will be refunded the total amount minus processing fees and the $500 non-refundable deposit.

  • Journeyers who cancel their journey 30 to 90 days before the start state will be refunded half the total amount minus processing fees.

  • Journeyers who cancel their journey less than 30 days before the start date will not be refunded.

  • Journeyers who choose to leave an active journey for any reason are not entitled to a refund. Due to the nature and heavy costs of operating permits, BE must adhere to the above itinerary and refund policy.
